Who Are We

About the Organization / Genesis

Sramajibi Mahila Sangha (SMS) is a pioneering community-based organization led by sex workers, working since 1994 in Kolkata. With a strong legacy of resisting violence, preventing trafficking, and empowering women, SMS stands as a symbol of collective strength and resilience. From legal advocacy to healthcare, education, and leadership development, our work spans across red-light districts of West Bengal, touching thousands of lives.

We operate with a vision to build a self-reliant community that can challenge systemic oppression, demand rights, and reclaim dignity. Our core approach is rooted in community leadership, and our interventions are shaped and driven by those most affected. SMS became one of the first self-help organizations established and run by sex workers in India.

Core Values

 Dignity First – Every life deserves respect.
 Power in Unity – Together, we rise.

 Zero Exploitation – Standing firm against trafficking of minor & unwilling.
 Freedom with Rights – Empowerment through justice.

Our Mission:

We empower sex workers and marginalized women by building collective strength, Prevent trafficking of minor & unwilling women into Sex Work, and fighting all forms of violence and exploitation. We strive to ensure dignity, legal rights, accessible health, and sustainable livelihoods through community-led initiatives and outreach efforts.

Our Vision:

A society where sex workers are free from trafficking, violence, and discrimination, recognized as equal citizens with rights and dignity, and empowered to lead change through solidarity, justice, and self-determination.

Our Objective:

Combat trafficking and exploitation while advancing the rights, dignity, and well-being of sex workers through community-driven interventions, legal empowerment, access to healthcare, and sustained advocacy for the recognition of sex work as legitimate labour.

What We Do

Through our Community-Led Anti-Trafficking Initiative, we operate Self-Regulatory Boards (SRBs) to
prevent trafficking of minor and unwilling entry into sex work. These boards, comprising sex workers,
survivors, doctors, legal experts and others – ensure age verification, counselling and safe reintegration,
promoting dignity and human rights.

Our initiatives focus on a range of issues, including health, education, livelihood, and social justice. We provide access to healthcare services, awareness programs on HIV/AIDS prevention, and counselling for physical and mental well-being. Through capacity building training and skill development workshops, we help women gain economic independence and improve their quality of life.

We build alliances and networks with policymakers, other organizations and global platforms to promote
sex workers’ rights as legitimate labor. Through media sensitization, policy advocacy, and collaboration, we challenge stigma and advance social justice.

By building safe spaces, fostering solidarity, and creating opportunities, Sramajibi Mahila Sangha ensures that every sex worker has the chance to lead a life of dignity, respect, and freedom.

Board Members

Sramajibi Mahila Sangha’s Executive Board is made up entirely of women sex workers actively involved in collective struggles, ensuring leadership is community-led, rooted in lived experience, and accountable to the community.
